Brother: Joe Atwood |
ATWOOD, JOE, was many things. For starters he was an accomplished athlete, terrific coach, nurturing father, longtime firefighter and business success. But all that tells only a little about Atwood. The essence of his life, what shone through the brightest, was that he cared about people. You hear it over and over when you talk to people who knew him: Jackie Joe Atwood, who passed away recently at 71, genuinely based his life on helping others. He was counsel to many, a helping hand, always an uniting force and a true friend. And he did it all with an upbeat nature. "Pappy, how can I help?" he would often say to people, using "pappy" as his telltale term of endearment. Over the years a ton of people learned to answer to pappy when Atwood spoke, and that became his nickname, too. He was most at home in informal, less pretentious settings, like when he coached girls softball after he moved to High Springs , Fla. , in 1992. He achieved a measure of financial independence, but was never one to confuse net worth with self worth. At the Coral Gables Fire Department, where Atwood worked for 32 years, he rose to be in contention for fire chief. Instead Atwood asked that the position be given to Phil Sistik, who was closer to retirement than he was and, besides, it would allow Sistik to retire at a higher pay scale. It was a selfless gesture that didn't surprise anybody who knew Atwood. After retirement he developed a thriving Christmas tree business, for years coordinating with Wayne Blanton to sell trees near the Boys and Girls Club on S.W. 32 Ave. and Dixie Highway . When Atwood's sister-in-law Sylvia Atwood worked as a receptionist at a Gainesville law firm, people often would notice her nameplate and ask if she was related to him. "He was so loved," she said from her Gainesville home. "I remember one guy in particular just kept talking about him like Joe was the most wonderful man who'd ever been born." Maybe he was. Atwood attended Coral Gables High, where in 1953 he became the school's first All-America football player. In a game against Jackson High, he once hit celebrated quarterback Lee Corso so hard that it left a permanent scar on Corso's chin. A guard-linebacker, Atwood signed a football scholarship with the University of Miami . Already a father by then, he had to forfeit his dream in his second year there to support his family. He began coaching football at the Coral Gables Youth Center and Boys and Girls Club, and produced a number of players who went on to play college ball."I really believe he could have been a pro coach, because he had a charisma beyond anything I've ever seen," said Joe Accurso, now a Miami chiropractor. "The thing is, he cared about us. I was not a good football player, but I knew Joe really cared about me." Atwood went on to play and then manage a Miami-based fast-pitch softball team. He saw the team rise to status as a perennial power in the South. "He was just a wonderful man," said Tito Gomez, a third baseman on those teams. Added Mike Hunt, the team's shortstop: "Joe had one set of rules and they were for everybody. "Atwood's best friend was Phil Young, who felt like an outsider when his family moved to Coral Gables . "He was all-everything in school and I didn't know anybody, but he befriended me," Young said. "He caused me to play football and probably caused me to graduate and go to college. So he really turned my life around." Atwood bought a unit at $10,000 in 1987 when Red Berry was seeking the finances to open a year- round youth baseball facility, in large part because Atwood appreciated Berry 's impact on kids. "I never heard anyone say a bad word about him," Berry said. Atwood is survived by his wife, Lee Atwood; three children, Pam Hauser, Joleen Atwood and Ed Atwood; three siblings, Earline Johnson, Nancy Lewis and Tommy Atwood; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
